rm bummer

What happens when I’m multi-tasking and doing a couple of jobs at once this morning? I erase a good number of the scripts I’ve created. Yes I have a backup from Saturday, but I lost one script for sure and another that’s been modified. Dang.

So I decided I’m going to use the del script that I found on the GLW and drop it in my ~/.scripts folder. Works pretty good for what I’ve tried it on so far. I used Gnomes trash (~/.Trash/) as where to dump to. I’d thought of it before but this is the first time I junked anything important… now, if I could just get in the habit of usingit.

  1. I just use TimeVault. Sweet program

  2. Or rdiff-backup – cronjob every hour or so ;)

Alternatively, put your scripts into a version control system like git or svn.

Both solutions give you the advantage, that you can go back to any point and even merge the old with the new version while at the same time not wasting any space, because only differences are being stored.

  3. I’ll give both of these a look at. The thoughts been ticking for a time now about backing up with rsync – I like the thought of being able to back up incrementally. My tar solution at the moment backs up Everything.
